At least 60% of people around the country say they do this every week. It has been estimated that about 145 million Americans walk regularly to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. If you are going head out for a hiking adventure, you want to make sure your feet are happy the whole time. Whether you will be wearing casual hiking boots, adventure shoes or waterproof walking boots, there are things you can and should do to keep your feet happy.

  1. Never go for a long hike in new boots. No matter how comfortable you think your casual hiking boots are going to be, you have to break them in before you start off on any hike. There are a number of reasons for this. If you have a different kind of boots, you need to get used to the weight. The main reason that you need to do this is to keep your feet happy. They will hate you if you set off in totally new boots.
  2. Bring your hiking socks to the store when you try on new boots. Your feet are not the only things that need to fit in your boots. If you do not take into account that will be taken up by your socks, you may end up getting a pair that really does not fit well when you are out on your hike. Getting casual hiking boots that fit is critically important for the comfort of your feet when you are on your hiking or trekking adventure. If you think you may wear two pairs of socks when you hike, wear two pairs when you shop for boots.
  3. Be careful with your lacing. This may seem like a simple thing to think about but it can make a big difference You do not want to ever make your laces too tight but when they are too loose, that can lead to blisters. The good news is that this is an easy thing to fix and to manage. Just pay close attention to your feet throughout the day. If your casual hiking boots seem too tight or lose change that up.
  4. Pay attention to swelling. It is not uncommon for a hiker’s feet to swell a bit when they start walking or hiking. If that is something that happens to you, there are a number of things you can do to help keep your feet happy. When you stop for breaks, stop to take a look at your feet. If you need to, loosen the laces. If you notice this is a real problem, you can start the day wearing two pairs of socks and then go down to one if your feet are really swollen.
  5. Do not let your feet get wet. Moisture can come from without and within. You can get waterproof boots to keep out moisture but you should also consider a powder to keep your feet nice and dry for the duration of your hike. If you are going camping and will be out overnight, bring along some newspaper to get the moisture out. If you do nit have waterproofing, you can also wrap your feet (over the socks) with a plastic grocery bag. This is a great trick to keep feet warm.
  6. Pay attention to how clean your boots are. This means inside and out. For the inside dirt, bring enough socks to wear a clean pair next to your feet every day. This is also a good way to make sure your feet stay dry. Wet feet are not happy feet. When you are home from your hike, you should make it a point to clean your boots on the outside. Any dirt or mud that is caked on can damage your casual hiking boots and make them less flexible.

There are some great reasons that people love to go hiking. Whether you are going on a day hike, a week in the woods or to do the Appalachian Trail, you want to pamper your feet.
